Marie Sklodowska Curie Early Stage Researcher (2 posts)

University of Oxford - Department of Physics

Parks Road, Oxford
Applications are invited for two Early Stage Researchers as part of the “DNA-Based Modular Nanorobotics” Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network www.DNA-Robotics.eu. These positions are suitable either as a first salaried position for researchers currently studying for a PhD that will be awarded after recruitment or for students who wish to undertake a first doctoral degree (Oxford DPhil). The posts are for a fixed term of three years.
ESRs will participate in the development of a new technology of modular nanorobotic systems based on structural DNA nanotechnology.
Project 1: Powered linear and rotary motion for molecular robotic devices.
Project 2: Modular assembly of integrated nanorobotic systems.
The successful candidates will develop techniques for the design, construction, actuation and characterization of functional synthetic nanostructures and for their integration to create modular molecular robotic systems. Responsibilities will include: participation in DNA-Robotics training programme; development of a personal career development plan; management of research activities; development of scientific techniques and experimental protocols; use of specialist scientific equipment; contribution of research ideas; testing hypotheses and analysis of data; collaboration on all aspects of research, including preparation of scientific reports, journal articles and presentation of papers and posters. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.
Applicants for DPhil study should possess, or be very close to obtaining, a Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, Biochemistry or other relevant science.
More experienced researchers who are close to obtaining a PhD and will not study for a doctoral degree should have relevant experience in biophysics, biochemistry, molecular or cellular biology, biological chemistry or computer science. Experience in DNA nanotechnology, single-molecule biophysics, or nucleic acid chemistry for these candidates would be an advantage.
All applicants should demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills, as well as an ability to manage own academic research and to contribute ideas for new research projects.
When recruited, ESRs must be in the first 4 years (FTE) of their research careers, not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the previous 3 years, and not have been awarded a doctorate.
Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Andrew Turberfield.
Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 16 February 2018 can be considered. You will be required to upload a CV, academic transcript, supporting statement and details of two referees as part of your online application.
